How to change a Stealth cylinder

Replacing the gas cylinder on a Stealth chair takes about 20 minutes with basic tools and restores the chair's full height range.

Time About 20 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Steps 5

What you need

  • Rubber mallet
  • Pipe wrench or channel locks
  • Work gloves
  1. 1

Lay the chair on its side

Put the chair on its side on a soft surface so the base and cylinder are accessible and the upholstery is protected.

  2. 2

Separate the base from the cylinder

Grip the cylinder with a pipe wrench or channel locks and tap the base away with the rubber mallet. The taper fit is friction only, so it releases with steady taps rather than force.

  3. 3

Free the cylinder from the seat mechanism

Tap the cylinder down and out of the seat plate. Keep hands clear of the base as it comes loose.

  4. 4

    Seat the new cylinder

Drop the new cylinder into the base, lower the seat mechanism onto it, and press down firmly. Sitting in the chair sets the taper.

  5. 5

    Test the full height range

Raise and lower the chair through its full travel a few times to confirm the lever engages and the chair holds height under load.

How to change Stealth bushings

Worn bushings cause a knock in the backrest. Replacing them takes about 15 minutes and removes the noise.

Time About 15 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Steps 4

What you need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Rubber mallet
  1. 1

    Identify the worn bushing

A knocking or clicking sound as the backrest moves usually means a bushing has worn. Flex the backrest by hand to locate which one.

  2. 2

    Ease the old bushing out

Work the flathead screwdriver under the lip of the bushing and lever it out. Worn bushings come out with little resistance.

  3. 3

    Press the new bushing in

Line the new bushing up square to the housing and tap it home with the rubber mallet until it sits flush.

  4. 4

    Check the movement

Move the backrest through its full range. The knock should be gone and the motion should feel smooth and even.

How to fix a loose Stealth backrest

A backrest with play in it is usually loose mounting hardware, which takes about 10 minutes to correct.

Time About 10 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Steps 3

What you need

  • Allen key set
  1. 1

    Check the backrest hardware

Most backrest movement traces back to loosened mounting hardware rather than a failed part. Locate the bolts where the backrest meets the seat frame.

  2. 2

    Tighten in a cross pattern

Snug the bolts in a cross pattern so the backrest seats evenly against the frame. Firm is enough — over-torquing strips the thread.

  3. 3

    Re-test under load

Sit in the chair and lean back through the full range. If play remains after tightening, the Free-Float mechanism needs service — contact us with your model number.
